Research Highlights

Dr. Struck is a renowned pediatric ophthalmologist and has made significant contributions to patient care and research. In a retrospective study on patients aged 7 to 22 months with cataract, Dr. Struck discovered that although this age group is generally not considered for intraocular lens implantation, children that did undergo this procedure had favorable outcomes similar to children older than 2 years and none of them developed secondary glaucoma. His study indicates that primary IOL implantation should be a consideration for younger children that require cataract surgery.

Dr. Struck, along with colleagues at the University of Wisconsin including Drs. Neal Barney, David Gamm, and Sarah Nehls, reported the use of insulin drops on six patients with refractory neurotrophic corneal ulcers. Topical insulin has been shown to improve corneal epithelial healing in animal models, but very little is known about this widely available and relatively safe medication for humans. Dr. Struck and his colleagues showed in this case series that topical insulin could completely re-epithelize corneal wounds within 25 days. Given the positive outcomes of this study, further investigations can be initiated to establish topical insulin as a potentially efficacious treatment for corneal ulcers clinically.
