Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery
Drs. Dortzbach and Bradley Lemke (clinical adjunct faculty) have been on the forefront of mentorship and characterization of ocular anatomy. Both mentored three oculoplastic researchers resulting in nationally recognized awards by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS):
- MJ Hawes “The microscopic anatomy of the lower eyelid retractors” won ASOPRS Best Thesis Research Award
- DD Sherman “Identification of orbital lymphatics: Enzyme histochemical, light microscopic and electron microscopic studies” won ASOPRS Surgical Anatomy Award and Pathology Award
- DO Kikkawa– “Relations of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system to the orbit and characterization of the orbitomalar ligament” won ASOPRS Best Thesis Research Award
Drs. Dortzbach, Lemke and Jacques Lasudry (fellow from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium) conducted a study that examined multipositional high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging of the human orbit. Their work found this modality to be highly efficacious in understanding functional anatomy and the work won the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Award In 1999.
Multipositional high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging of the human orbit’s functional anatomy
Drs. Dortzbach, Lemke and Sangki Jeong (fellow from the Department of Ophthalmology, Chonnam University Hospital, Chonnam University Medical School and Chonnam Research Institute of Medical Science, Kwangju, Korea) conducted an anatomical study of the Asian upper eyelid in comparison to the Caucasian eyelid. The evaluation identified structural differences critical to proper surgical care of those of Asian descent and won the Topcon Research Award for Best Research Thesis by a Korean Ophthalmologist.
