The UW Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is pleased to welcome three new members to the UW Ophthalmology Alumni Association.
Dalia Girgis, MD, PhD is a comprehensive ophthalmologist in Lighthouse Point, Florida, who specializes in the management and treatment of dry eyes and blepharitis, cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal diseases. Dr. Girgis earned her doctoral degree in microbiology from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana and her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. After completing an internship in internal medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida, Dr. Girgis completed her ophthalmology residency with the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, where she was elected chief resident. Dr. Girgis then served two years as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before relocating to Florida in 2014, where she founded the Insight Eye Institute.
Jennifer Larson, MD is an assistant professor and comprehensive ophthalmologist with the UW Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Dr. Larson completed her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. This was followed by an internship and ophthalmology residency training with the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, where she served as chief resident. Immediately following, Dr. Larson joined the faculty in the UW Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Her clinical interests include cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and urgent care. Her academic interests include medical student education, residency surgical training, and advocacy.
Andrew Thliveris, MD, PhD is professor emeritus with the UW Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Dr. Thliveris earned a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Arizona. He then completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1994. After an internship at the University of Utah, he completed his ophthalmology residency at the UW Hospitals and Clinics, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship. Dr. Thliveris the faculty at UW-Madison in 2000, specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology and cataract surgery. During his tenure, he held many important leadership roles including: Veterans Affairs Hospital service chief; vice chair of resident education; residency director; and co-director of the department’s cataract extraction phacoemulsification course. Dr. Thliveris retired in September 2023, after serving 28 years with the department.
Drs. Girgis, Larson and Thliveris will assume their roles on the board in May 2024.
