Dr. Cat Burkat, DOVS Oculoplastic surgeon, initiates and coordinates the first-ever oculoplastic surgeon visit to Siguatepeque, Honduras’ John Eaves Medical Clinic in partnership with ORBITS Worldwide, Inc., and Sharing Resources Worldwide, Inc. (Mary Dowling). Accompanied by UW Ophthalmology Resident, Ashley Lundin, MD, Burkat and Lundin perform beneficial surgery for infants and children only. DIO sponsors Dr. Ashley Lundin’s participation. Alongside colleagues screened 32 pediatric oculoplastic patients and performed 26 oculoplastic procedures.

The Division of International Ophthalmology (DIO) reestablished as the International Ophthalmology Initiatives (IOI) under the co-direction of UW professor and oculoplastic specialist Cat N. Burkat, MD, FACS and Yasmin S. Bradfield, MD, pediatric ophthalmologist and John W. Doolittle Professor.

GO Initiatives Launches Resident Global Ophthalmology Curriculum

Global Ophthalmology (GO) Initiatives launches novel 3-year interactive, multi-delivery format experiential program is to assist residents in preparations to practice as a professional in delivering services to save sight in the ever-changing world. The coursework is informed by the ACGME Core Competencies and in alignment with American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) efforts to create new avenues for academic global ophthalmology. At its core, this integrated approach supports resident professional and personal learning and growth in relation to their career as an ophthalmologist.

GO Initiatives launches a Global Research Impact Project, to the department’s source basic and clinical researcher’s areas of significant accomplishment including, but not limited to general publication impact, foreign lab and publication collaborations, global training impact, foreign scholar mentorship and global industry partnerships that have made a profound impact on the field of ophthalmology from 1970-2020. This project celebrates the esteemed accomplishments of our research community and aspired strong metrics for representing our mission of global leadership in saving sight. As a result, 35 researchers submitted over 220 data points for the department to celebrate during its 50th celebration.

The GO Initiatives Committee officially welcomes a resident representative to the committee, signifying a commitment to resident feedback and involvement in the future of these initiatives.

Cat Burkat, MD, FACS, Presents at University of Santo Tomas Sesquicentennial Post-Graduate Course in Ophthalmology

Dr. Cat Burkat was an invited distinguished speaker and presented "Nuances in Botulinum Toxin, Fillers and Laser Skin Rejuvenation" as part of Beautiful Eyes: The Ophthalmologist's Perspective, the University of Santo Tomas Sesquicentennial Post-Graduate Course in Ophthalmology. This course was a part of the sesquicentennial celebration of 150 years of existence of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. The meeting was open to medical students, residents, medical alumni, general ophthalmologists, and local and international oculoplastic surgeons.
