The University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences had a strong presence at the annual Global Ophthalmology Summit, hosted by the University of Illinois–Chicago and held in Chicago, IL, August 15–17.
Department Chair Terri Young, MD, MBA, and Emeritus Professor Burton Kushner, MD delivered podium presentations. Professors Yasmin Bradfield, MD, and Cat Burkat, MD, FACS, along with Hannah Baker, MA, Global Ophthalmology Manager, contributed to the program through committee service, session moderation, and administrative support.
Notably, six medical students attended, presenting three projects under the mentorship of UW faculty. One project highlighted the Global Cataract Symposium in collaboration with global clinical adjunct faculty Dr. Julie Pegu and Dr. Catherine Macaraig. In addition to presenting posters, students participated in the hackathon and ophthalmic wet labs, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field.
DOVS has been an active member of the Academic Global Ophthalmology Consortium (AGO) since its inception in 2022 and looks forward to the next Global Ophthalmology Summit, to be hosted by Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, August 7–9, 2026.
