Research Highlights

Dr. van Landingham is an expert in oculoplastic surgery with research interests in applications of big data in eye research, ophthalmology telehealth, the functional impact of vision loss, and treatment of facial synkinesis. Past work has assessed the impact of vision loss on falls and physical activity using large databases, including the publicly available National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and real-world activity measurement. 

She recently co-published an extensive review on physical therapy as an effective treatment and rehabilitation of those afflicted with facial nerve palsy. They concluded that a multidisciplinary approach must be taken with these patients and that facial neuromuscular training (NMR) as well as botulinum toxin injections may be beneficial in improving facial movements.

Ongoing work includes integration of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s IRIS (Intelligent Research in Sight) registry at UW, evaluation of the impact of COVID-19 on ophthalmic care, and establishing best practices in oculoplastic telemedicine.
