Ophthalmologists and optometrists at the University of Wisconsin have been advancing the study and treatment of eye diseases since 1925. Today, the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences offers the full spectrum of eye care, delivered by expert faculty who lead in clinical care, education, and research.

Our team includes subspecialists who are nationally recognized in the treatment of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, eye tumors, and other complex conditions. In addition to subspecialty care, we provide comprehensive eye exams, preventive care, and optical services. Our optometrists and vision rehabilitation professionals work alongside other specialists to guarantee seamless, patient-centered care.

Faculty are actively engaged in sight-saving research, including work to improve corneal transplantation, understand how the eye changes with age, and develop new diagnostics and therapies. Many of these advancements move directly from the lab into clinical application.

We are proud to serve as a referral destination for routine and complex eye conditions. We also offer consults and new patient evaluations both in person and virtually, with expanded telehealth capabilities to support referring providers across Wisconsin and beyond.

Our department is committed to education at all levels. Medical students, residents, and fellows train alongside seasoned clinicians in an academic environment grounded in innovation and community service.
