Research Highlights

Dr. Barney has contributed significantly to the research of the anterior eye. In one such publication, he performed a thorough assessment of the treatment for conjunctivitis. He found that both bacterial and viral conjunctivitis generally do not require treatment. However, conjunctivitis caused by gonorrhea or chlamydia should be treated with antibiotics in those that wear contact lenses. Allergic conjunctivitis is usually alleviated with antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers. Furthermore, Dr. Barney also discovered that oral acyclovir provided after keratoplasty for herpes simplex keratitis reduced graft failure in those that had a history of recurrent herpes simplex keratitis. The work was significant in adding to patient outcome care in those that underwent keratoplasty because of herpes simplex keratitits. These collective works have been cited over 400 times.
