Research Interests
Epidemiologic research of age-related eye diseases and ocular complications of diabetes including glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy
Research Highlights
Drs. Barbara and Ronald Klein have had a significant impact on the field of ophthalmic epidemiology nationally and internationally. The population-based epidemiological research resulting from the Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of Diabetic Retinopathy (WESDR) and the Beaver Dam Eye Study (BDES) have produced countless publications for improving patient care for those with diabetes and age-related eye diseases. Their work has been foundational for the development of many disease severity protocols used in the grading of ocular photographs used worldwide, while also training and mentoring young researchers and post-doctoral students from across the globe.
Drs. Barbara and Ronald Klein were honored in a publication titled, “The 100 Most Frequently Cited Articles in Ophthalmology Journals,” for having produced 7 total, with 3 of the top 5, of the 100 most cited articles in ophthalmology journals since 1975. They have been prolific in producing well over 1100 significant peer-reviewed manuscripts.
