Welcome to Your Ophthalmology Away Rotation
We are excited to have you rotating with the University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. This away rotation is an opportunity to learn more about the field, demonstrate professionalism, and show how you function as a future colleague. You are not expected to arrive as an expert, but we value curiosity, engagement, and follow-through.

How to Have a Successful Rotation
- Be curious and open-minded. Ophthalmology has a steep learning curve and curiosity is valued more than prior knowledge.
- Ask questions, then look things up. Following up on questions you asked earlier shows initiative and retention.
- Be patient with yourself. Skills such as operating a slit lamp, fundus exams, and imaging interpretation take time.
- Stay engaged in clinic. Observe carefully, listen to clinical discussions, and volunteer appropriately when able.
- Take time after clinic to review charts. Revisiting interesting patients, imaging (OCT, Optos, visual fields), and treatment plans help reinforce learning. Also take this time to prepare for tomorrow’s patients.
- Learn the lingo. Becoming familiar with terminology, and abbreviations will significantly improve communication.
How to Earn a Strong Evaluation on an Away Rotation
- Be reliable and punctual. Consistency and professionalism are noticed immediately.
- Demonstrate curiosity and engagement throughout the day, even when not directly involved.
- Be teachable and receptive to feedback and apply it going forward.
- Follow through on learning tasks or questions you are given.
- Interact respectfully with all members of the team, including technicians, nurses, surgical techs, and staff.
