The University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health’s ophthalmology residency program continues to earn national recognition, ranking among the nation’s top ophthalmology training programs in Doximity’s 2025-2026 Residency Navigator survey.
Based on nominations from more than 20,000 U.S. physicians, the survey evaluates residency programs across 28 medical specialties, including ophthalmology. Among approximately 125 ophthalmology residency programs nationwide, UW climbed to No. 19, up from No. 25 in the previous rankings.
Doximity’s rankings are based on peer nominations, resident satisfaction surveys, and feedback from current trainees, providing a comprehensive view of program quality and reputation.

The UW’s ophthalmology residency program offers four positions each year. Following a post-medical school internship year in internal medicine, residents complete three years of specialized training across all ophthalmology subspecialties. The program combines rigorous clinical and surgical experience with mentorship, research opportunities, and personalized professional development.
