Med Students Practice Ophthalmology Skills at Micro-Olympics

Ophthalmology faculty and residents shared an evening of learning and fun with medical students at the annual Micro-Olympics at the Health Sciences Learning Center on the evening of September 19, 2023.

The annual event is sponsored by the UW School of Medicine and Public Health’s Ophthalmology Interest Group and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

Dr. Jennifer Larson, Dr. Alexander Miranda, and ophthalmology residents taught and supervised medical students at various stations throughout the room. Each station had a unique micro-surgical task to complete, including performing a capsulorhexis on a grape, suturing, transferring grains of rice with chop sticks, and more.

“The Micro-Olympics is a great opportunity for students to interact and network with faculty and residents in the department and practice microsurgical skills in a fun low-stress environment, while learning more about the field of ophthalmology,” said Larson.  “It is a great opportunity to expose medical students to our profession and spark the interest for possible future ophthalmologists.”
