The UW Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) and the UW School of Veterinary Medicine proudly hosted another annual Ocular Pathology Day on July 19, 2024.
The event is led by DOVS Professor and Ophthalmic Pathology Service Chief Heather Potter, MD, and her colleague from the Vet School, Leandro Teixeira. It brings together ophthalmology residents, medical students, visiting medical students, pre-residency imaging fellows, and veterinary school learners for a day that is as fun as it is educational.
The day began with virtual Grand Rounds, where Tatyana Milman, MD, of Wills Eye Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University, presented “Consultations in Eye Pathology.”
After the talk, ophthalmology residents delivered case presentations to their colleagues. Two weeks prior to the event, they each received two cases to review. They determined the diagnosis and created a scenario for presentation. Lucas Maakestad, MD (PGY-2) received the award for the most creative presentation. Claire Hermsen, MD (PGY-2) and Breanna Aldred, MD (PGY-4) tied for second.
In the afternoon, participants walked to the UW School of Veterinary Medicine for lunch and a talk by Dr. Teixeira on the “Comparative Ocular Anatomy and Histology of Animals and Humans.” This was followed by a rousing game of “Jeopardy!” and an examination of pathology slides from Dr. Potter’s private collection. The event culminated with a trip to the UW-Memorial Union terrace.
“The event was a resounding success,” said Dr. Potter. “We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from all of our learners, in both the interdisciplinary collaboration between the departments and the interactivity of the sessions.”
