Annual Right to Sight Clinic Serves Dozens of Patients

The 2024 Annual World Sight Day Right to Sight Clinic was held Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the UW Health University Station Eye Clinic. More than 60 people were provided with eye care services, and 42 pairs of spectacles were provided at no charge.

The event is a partnership between the University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) and Combat Blindness International as part of World Sight Day (WSD). WSD is an annual day of awareness, held in October, that focuses global attention on blindness and vision impairment. This year’s event focused on youth empowerment and how to inspire children everywhere to love their eyes.

DOVS schedulers, technicians, opticians, medical students, residents, and faculty annually contribute to this important community-focused clinic.

“As eye care providers, we know how important it is to get your eyes checked. We can provide simple eye glasses that change a person’s ability to function as well as screen for blinding diseases like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma,” said Anna Momont, MD. “I am grateful to Combat Blindness International and all of our volunteers and UW Health staff for supporting this clinic, which is an important initiative to improve access to eyecare for everyone in our community.”

The department has partnered with CBI since 2007 to provide services to underinsured or uninsured Dane County residents that need eye care. Patients are provided with a full eye exam with refraction and dilation, as well as screening for common eye diseases by our doctors, residents, and technicians.
