Our program provides a comprehensive externship for fourth-year optometry students, emphasizing practical experience in an academic, medical setting. Students rotate through a range of subspecialties—including urgent care, glaucoma, low vision, and specialty contact lenses—with opportunities to observe surgery, attend lectures and conferences, and work alongside experienced providers at multiple UW Health clinics.
Program Overview
This structured, high-volume externship prepares students for independent, full-scope practice. Externs are expected to see 6–8 patients per day, manage clinical testing and case assessments, and present to supervising optometrists while gaining confidence and competence in patient care.
What to Expect:

- Comprehensive care, urgent care, low vision, glaucoma, pediatrics, specialty contacts
- Patient logs and complete testing
- Rotation across UW Health clinics and potential surgical observation

- Grand Rounds (Fridays, 7:00–8:00 am)
- Basic Science Lectures (Fridays, 1:00–3:30 pm)
- Monday Morning Conferences (Mondays, 7:00–8:00 am)
