Inherited Retinal Disease (IRD) Clinic
The University of Wisconsin is proud to house the state’s only IRD clinic. Serving both pediatric and adult patients, the IRD clinic offers comprehensive services aimed at diagnosing and treating a range of rare retinal disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa and Leber congenital amaurosis.

Our clinic features highly specialized equipment and testing capabilities not found in other centers:
- Advanced diagnostics like Multifocal Electroretinography (ERG) and Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) testing
- Genetic counseling, a DNA repository, and a robust IRD database
- Access to clinical trials for gene and molecular therapies
With locations in Madison and La Farge, we’re committed to expanding access to specialized care across the state. Learn more about our outreach.
Telemedicine for Retinopathy of Prematurity
Our pediatric ophthalmologists provide essential screening and treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in two neonatal intensive care units in Madison, Wisconsin. High-resolution imaging allows our specialists to diagnose and monitor this sight-threatening condition remotely — ensuring timely, life-changing treatment for at-risk newborns. Education
We offer a dynamic, hands-on learning experience for medical students, ophthalmology residents, and clinical fellows — preparing them to tackle the world’s most pressing eye care challenges.
- Medical students at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health gain early exposure through rotations in our ophthalmology service.
- Residents and fellows assist in surgery, diagnose rare inherited retinal diseases, and use advanced imaging tools like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
- Global learning is built into our training. Residents have the option to explore global ophthalmology through a hybrid curriculum, while fellows, faculty, and alumni can participate in fieldwork at partner sites in India and the Philippines.
Research
Research is at the heart of our mission. Our pediatric specialists are leading groundbreaking studies to uncover the genetic causes of childhood blindness and develop innovative treatments for conditions like pediatric glaucoma.
Through our Clinical Eye Research Unit, we’re advancing care through cutting-edge clinical trials, including:
- Myopia Genetics Study – Identifying genes that influence eye growth and nearsightedness. Read more about our myopia study.

- Whole Eye OCT Project – Exploring how eye shape changes impact the development of myopia. Read more about our OCT study.
Our work is shaping the future of pediatric eye care—locally and globally. View our current clinical trials.
