Sanbrita Mondal, OD, clinical optometrist, clinical adjunct assistant professor and director of the UW Health Low Vision Clinic, is part of a team of researchers who have been awarded the McPherson Eye Research Institute 2021 Expanding Our Vision award for their project, “Designing Augmented Reality Systems to Facilitate Safe Cooking for People with Low Vision.”
Yuhang Zhao, PhD, assistant professor, and Bilge Mutlu, PhD, associate professor, both in the Department of Computer Sciences, are collaborating with Dr. Mondal. The project will utilize augmented reality (AR) glasses to enhance vision by intelligently recognizing the environment and generating tailored visual augmentations, thereby enabling people with low vision to cook independently and safely.
These research efforts directly support the expanding services planned for the UW Health Low Vision Clinic, located at UW Health University Station Eye Clinic.
The McPherson Eye Research Insititute Expanding Our Vision grant program was launched in 2020 to provide awards of up to $10,000 to researchers performing vision-related research in visual communication, visual cognition, visual perception/performance, data visualization, and/or bioinformatics.
