Groundbreaking research from Yao Liu, MD and colleagues reported that low pigment density in a part of the light-sensing retina called the macula may serve as an early warning sign of glaucoma – suggesting a strategy for the testing and treatment of the disease. The research, which was funded by the National Eye Institute, is based on nearly 400 women who were followed for 15 years. The study published October 6 in the British Medical Journal Open Ophthalmology.
